Cat Fence Containment

Every year, more than 300,000 of the UK’s 7.5 million cats are killed on the roads. At DogFence, we believe cats deserve the same freedom and protection we’ve provided to dogs for over two decades. Our cat fence containment systems use advanced, humane technology combined with professional animal behaviour training to keep your cat safe outdoors—without restricting their natural curiosity.

Recent innovations in invisible cat fencing have allowed us to offer an affordable, proven, and stress-free solution for cat owners across the UK. Whether you live in a rural property or a suburban garden, our systems provide a safe boundary while letting your cat enjoy the sights, smells, and sunshine of the great outdoors.

Cat Fence Systems for Cats – Safe, Humane Outdoor Protection

While much of our website focuses on dogs, cats can also be safely contained using our hidden pet fence technology. For cats, we install the System 1200+, supplied with the lightweight R7m receiver collar—just 30g, making it comfortable for all cat breeds and sizes. This collar is small enough for even the most petite cats, yet durable and waterproof for everyday outdoor use.

Our cat fence systems work differently from traditional netting or roller-top fences. They create an invisible boundary that can be tailored to the shape and size of your property, protecting your cat from hazards while preventing access to sensitive areas such as wildlife habitats or neighbouring gardens. You can read more about how cat fences work and the benefits they bring in our cat fence benefits and success stories guide.

Escaping cats are a growing concern. Not only can they be injured, but they may also cause harm to local wildlife. Because cats’ natural hunting instincts are difficult to control, many owners struggle to keep them safe. By installing an electronic cat containment system, you can give your cat freedom to roam within a designated safe zone—removing the risk of wandering into danger, while avoiding the cost and appearance issues of large enclosures or netting.

How to Train Your Cat to an Invisible Fence

Our cat fence training programme is designed to be stress-free and tailored to each cat’s unique personality. Unlike dogs, most cats dislike walking on a lead and don’t respond to verbal training in the same way. Their natural curiosity and independence require a different approach.

Training is carried out off-lead to avoid stress and allow your cat to explore freely within safe boundaries. We take into account your cat’s movement patterns, temperament, and comfort level, adjusting the process to suit their needs.

Before training begins, we install the system around the boundary with careful consideration of your cat’s potential escape routes. Clear, permanent landmarks are used to help them recognise their safe zone.

Initial training starts indoors using an indoor unit. This helps your cat learn the boundaries without distraction or risk. After two to five days of adjustment, the outdoor system is activated, and training continues in short, positive sessions.

Our approach is backed by research, including a Lincoln University study on cat containment which found that invisible fencing does not harm a cat’s long-term welfare and can improve behaviour by reducing risks and increasing security.

Professional or Self-Installation Options

Our cat fence containment systems can be installed by our professional team or supplied as a DIY self-installation kit. Both options include our proven step-by-step training protocol and full support from our experienced team.

  • Professional Installation – We handle everything: setting up the boundary system, fitting your cat’s receiver collar, and beginning the training process with you. This option ensures correct installation from day one and gives you complete peace of mind.

  • Self-Installation Kit – Ideal for confident DIYers, our kit includes the receiver collar, boundary wire, training flags, and detailed written instructions. You’ll also receive ongoing telephone and email support from our team.

Most cats adapt to their new boundaries within two weeks, learning in short, manageable steps. The R7m micro receiver is designed specifically for cats, delivering gentle, low-level stimulation suitable for their size and temperament. All collars are available in a choice of mini or extra-small straps for comfort and style.

Installation Considerations for Cat Fence Systems

When installing a system for cats—or for both cats and dogs—it’s important to carefully consider the placement of the boundary wire. This prevents your cat from being able to jump or climb over the signal field. The boundary can be adjusted on the transmitter from 2ft to 12ft, depending on your property size and containment needs.

As with all DogFence systems, your cat can also be trained to use the indoor system (I50 or BOB). These indoor units work with the same receiver collar and can be placed to keep your cat out of certain rooms, stairways, beds, or sofas. You can find more details about the I50 on our website or by calling our team.

Important safety note: As with dogs, cat collars must be removed for a minimum of 6 hours within any 24-hour period to prevent pressure sores.

“After losing two cats, in quick succession, to road accidents we purchased one of your fences. Our garden is “established” so we were worried that your installer might have problems. To our amazement, he ducked, dived and burrowed into all corners and sides with apparent ease!!”
